I've talked a little about some of my favorite people at the gym - yes, I'm there to work out, but you can't argue that people watching at the gym is BY FAR the highlight of each workout. Spin class seems to attract the best of the best and I've written about some of them here (one of them being here) but I feel like I need to add a few more after our classes Wednesday and today. These are classic!
First, the gentleman three bikes down from me and up one row. I know you are older, but you knew enough to have bike shorts and a dri-wicking shirt on so I don't know that I can excuse this. First you wore these:
And I'm totally fine with them (although I'd never be caught dead biking in sandals, but that's just me and I won't judge you), but you then did this to those sandals: Yikes. That's all I can say about that.
To the guy next to me. The music in the spin room is REALLY loud. Like, Tom's biking next to me and I can't hear him loud. I can only imagine how loud your iPod had to have been because you were clearly jamming to a different beat.
To the lady that walked in on Wednesday with two inch wedge leather sandals and a cardigan. Oh boy. First, it's winter in Ohio. I think the high on Wednesday was close to 35 - I know, warming trend, but not THAT warm. Obviously you felt the same because you did the whole spin class with your cardigan on. A very nice black sweater cardigan. While I was dripping buckets, you were wrapped in your cardigan. Maybe you were cold because while we were busting our asses on intervals, you were checking your email between each 4 minute interval. And responding to said emails. But I'm so glad that you got your workout in and mentioned to me that your husband has done the Ironman 3 times. I needed to know that.
We're thinking of doing a double spin class tomorrow instead of a trainer ride at home. I can't wait to see the characters that come out of the woodwork for that one!

What about the guy who was grunting next to me last week?! haha -- we could write a book on this. Someone probably has!
dont hate me...I actually like the look of those sandals for class ? but would never get them now:)
D
My spin classes aren't nearly that interesting. I can't stop laughing at the sandals with socks. OMG!!
Hilarious! Sounds like some interesting characters at your gym!
Hilarious! My dad has biking sandals... sigh.... At least he doesn't wear socks with them.
Do you follow BDD?? He has done a couple of posts like this: http://tridiesel.blogspot.com/2011/02/annoying-people-you-cant-avoid-at-gym_22.html
People watching is the best! My Mom and I have been experts since I was a kid...in some great places. Gym folks can be a strange breed!
I've never been to a spin class and now I can't wait!!! I love people-watching and the gym is a prime location!
there is a guy at my gym who wears the same sandals with the same socks on the treadmil with pj pants!
At my first half-ironman a guy passed me in bike sandals on a mountain bike! Fortunately, I passed him back, because that would have been downright embarrassing. Can't wait for more stories!
That's hilarious! Thanks for the observations. I love to watch people too, and the gym is a perfect spot to see rather unusual things...
WOW!! Nice stories!! Ha ha! The sandal gy seems to creep up everywhere!!
Yikes. clip-in sandals?
I didn't even know those existed.
File that under "just because you can, doesn't mean you should..."
I need me some of those sandals, but I'll have to check and see if I have the matching socks :-)
My mom has the keen cycling sandals. While not for me, I think they would be fun for touring.
I totally couldn't wait for a reason to tell you this recent people watching story. So glad you posted this! This week, during my hour brick class (30bike, 30 track/treadmill), there was a new lady there, who was on the larger side. She did great for the spin portion, but as soon as it was over, she began pounding fun sized Skittles before the track portion, and in between sprints! Yeah, I know I eat what looks like a brownie on the spin bike (it is not, trust me, it is a homemade buckwheat, apricot, raisin bar-no chocolate), but that is because I swim first and need either a banana or a bar before the class. That was a new one to me. Sadly, if she was more in shape, I might not have thought so much about it. I hope that was not mean, but I know it was really judgemental of me :( I just know it would have made Jillian Michaels furious.
OHM the sandals!!
What is up with that lady. It would have been kind of funny if her heels had clip in bindings on them though.
Man, I wish we had spin classes here, sounds entertaining.
a cardigan?! really?? what a wacka doo.
There are times that I have wanted to have my own iPod on during spinning. No one needs to be playing Right Said Fred during spinning. That is where I draw the proverbial line friend.
p.s. would you rather be passed by sandal guy or speedo guy?
oh thats awesome! TEVAS!! Gym watching is just as good as airport watching.
Mr Ipod and Ms Cardigan tooks spots away from people who might have actually wanted a workout. I swear 90% of these classes are not following the teacher, when your are doing "hill" work and I am barely turning over the fly wheel, I see half the class bouncung in thier saddles doing 100+ rpm
I work with a guy who rocks the socks and sandals. I feel embarrased for him. Good thing he is married, cuz he would have no chance. Maybe his wife does the socks and sandals thing too?
Cardigan on the trainer? (face palm)
Can I get some of those characters in my spin classes? I need some interesting humorous situations going on in my classes. Usually mine are so serious. Even sometimes the instructor has trouble getting people to smile/laugh at jokes. Otherwise, I LOVE people watching. Hope you had a good weekend!
Awesome. I LOVE people watching. By far even better than the gym is the airport. Heather and I enjoy getting there more than 2 hours early. We openly laugh at people and talk about them as they walk by. I am not perfect by any means, but some of these people are SO FAR GONE its hilarious!!!
As for the socks and sandals... UGH! Takes me back to college with this one kid... birkenstock sandals and socks. Heather and I made fun of him soooooo much.
Hilarious!
I once witnessed a tri-guy slip on one of those gel seats on the spin-bikes just before class. We ragged him good about it. Ha!!
We have the email checker in a class I go to as well. I love the women that come to class for social hour. If you can have a conversation you aren't working hard enough!
hahaha ... I seriously need to go to a gym in Ohio.
Wow, that is sexy....
