Drinking the kool-aid

Or something like that.  I had my 28 week appointment this morning and with that, came the test for gestational diabetes.  If you don't know what that entails, it's drinking 50 grams of pure sugar in the form of an orange drink and then exactly one hour later having your blood glucose (BG) level tested via a  blood draw.  I know a lot about this stuff because I'm married to a type 1 diabetic.   I also know that I don't want gestational diabetes.  I wasn't looking forward to this.

I had to fast starting at midnight.  Of course I woke up at 4:30 with the biggest rumbles in my stomach.  At 8:30 I drank the juice.  I swear it's the Hi-C orange drink that I used to love from McDonald's as a kid.  It's a shame that it's what our kids drink.  I had no problems getting it down... it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought.

At 8:50 I checked my BG (because again, I'm married to a Type 1... I have the tools to check readily available).  I was 108 - which is perfect.  Good.  Maybe this will go well.  I got to the doctor at 9:20 and checked again - 138.  WHAT?  Ugh... They drew my blood exactly an hour after I finished the drink and I asked my doctor what BG number would cause me to "fail" and have to repeat - 130 or higher.  Oye ve... when I got to the car, I tested again and was at 88 so I'm hoping it dropped enough between getting out of the car and getting my blood drawn.  I know that I don't have gestational diabetes based on those number and the fact that I fell to a very normal range by 9:45, but we'll see.  I sure hope I don't have to repeat this - drinking that stuff again and sitting at the doctors for 3 hours does not sound like my version of a fun day!

The doctor gave me a great report - blood pressure is 100/60 (nice and low) and at 28 weeks, I'm up 17 pounds.  He said that he couldn't be happier with that.  Then they measured the bump.  Now I've been saying all along that it's big (Tom lovingly reaffirms that about 16 times a day) - I know people that are at the same place as me and are MUCH smaller.  And I am right... my belly is measuring 2 weeks ahead!  Hahaha... at least the weight gain isn't too much.  I'm fine with it.  It's not like he was telling me something I didn't know. Right now that doesn't mean much.  I think Tom's hoping that it doesn't mean I deliver early because that would be right around the time of Ironman Texas! :)

I'm still running and biking and walking.  I'm winded a lot more.  I waddle some a lot.  It's all part of it. :)  I'm loving this whole experience though.  It's truly amazing!!!  And I feel like the next 12 weeks are going to be the slowest 12 weeks of my life until I get to meet this sweet little girl!

It had to be a man who thought it was good idea for a pregnant woman to fast.. for any test! :) I am so happy for you and that you and that sweet little girl are doing well. She's beautiful!

Ha! I am reading this post just before we head out the door for our appointment. Jennie will be drinking the koolaid shortly :)

Sounds like your procedure is slightly different though. No fasting required for Jennie. They gave us the koolaid at the last appt so she just has to drink it an hour before our appt today.

Fingers crossed a good result comes back and you don't have to repeat!

12 weeks!!!!

BTW - Have you seen the parenting website http://crappypictures.com/ yet? Hilarious!

With my family history, I was pretty scared the first time I did the GD test. I thought it tasted more like syrupy orange soda, but wasn't that awful. I had a nice solid # like 100 or something at an hour. Dr was pleased and I worried less the 2nd pg though I was heavier and worried a little b/c of that. You sound like you are doing awesome. So pleased for you and Tom. Oh, and relish these last "slow" weeks. I'm convinced that time ran slow when I was a kid, fast as an adult and in full warp speed once we had kids. I blink an whole MONTHS go by! And it gets worse the older (and busier) they get! Take some belly bump pics for the baby book - I wish I had more than the one or two I have. Also, go out on a few dates - it will be tough to do that in a few months.

FYI - I'm riding the Tour De Cure (St. Louis) this year to raise money for the American Diabetes Association - my first century!

Wow--those 3d ultrasounds are just amazing! So happy everything has gone well for you throughout. It is definitely a crazy process, but so worth it!

Those 3d ultrasounds creep me out a little, do they to you? Or is it just us non-baby carrying folk =).

I've had a couple of friends come back with positive GD results and have to be on very strict diets throughout their pregnancies. None actually resulted in diabetes once the children were born but still a scary endeavor. Since I've been essentially off sugar for awhile now, I have no clue what the heck my blood sugar would do if I drank pure sugar.

Glad that baby girl (and baby momma) are happy and healthy!

Great sonopicture. I'm amazed that you "started" fasting at midnight and were famished by 4:30? Wow.

Love the picture. We don't get anymore unless I go pay for one.

I Hated the juice my first two pregnancies. It made me sick both times. Never had GD with them though so that's good.

As far as weight gain I'm up 25 lbs and measuring right on. I don't feel bad since I'm still running/doing crossfit :) We did row yesterday and I felt a little like a seal on stilts.

H&H 12 weeks!

12 weeks? That's crazy! It feels like yesterday that you told us that Abigail was coming. That's so fast! I hope the report comes back ok about the diabetes. I'm sure you're good to go. No worries. Jenn and I were talking about y'all today and how we wanted to hang out soon. We also got the invite to the baby shower. Yay!! Can't wait!

I wish they had those 3D pics for all three of my kids. They only had them for my last one. He's 8 now. It's so neat to be able to see them isn't it??

I'm sure all will be well! I remember drinking the orange drink from the glass bottle and thinking it tasted just like McDonalds Hi C too!

28 weeks is really getting there! Time to start getting all of that "baby stuff" ready. Pack your emergency bag, etc. All that's left now is for the kid to get bigger. hang in there!
